For number of years now I have been relying on a small free utility to fix the automatic PDF thumbnail preview when it stops working in 64bit versions of Windows 7, 8 & 8.1. If your PDF icons show the generic icon image rather than a miniature preview thumbnail, download and run this automatic installer and your thumbnails will display again. See:
